This suborder is divided into the infraorders Cicadomorpha (cicadas, leafhoppers, treehoppers and spittlebugs) and planthoppers (Fulgoromorpha). Auchenorrhyncha are found throughout the world and this suborder comprises, approximately 40000 species.
