Beetles
...tarctica. Central Europe has around 8,000 different beetle species. The oldest beetle fossils date from about 265 million years ago. Beetles’ bodies are significantly different to other insects’ in that they do not solely comprise head, chest and abdomen. The second section consists solely of the prothorax, of which only the neck shield on top of the body is evident. The remaining two sections of the chest, together with the abdomen, form one unit, which is overlaid by the first pair of wings (the cover wings). Beetles can vary enormously in size ranging from 170 mm in length (Titan beetle in Brazil) to lengths of 0.5 to 75 mm (European species). The largest beetle in Ger...

Mecoptera
...ng. A notable characteristic of the adult insect is the elongation of the mouth parts; this has earned it the name „Schnabelfliege“ in German (Schnabel = beak ; Fliege = fly). The larvae look like caterpillars, but have real legs on the chest and abdomen segments. A fork placed on the last abdomen segment also serves the movement of the larvae. Some examples of Mecoptera are: snow scorpionflies, hangingflies and species of the the Panorpidae.

Panorpidae
...ntral Europe. These often have a body length of 18 mm. The Panorpidae have an elongated head (beak shaped) with mouth parts for chewing and biting. The flies have 4 large dark wings, which are worn on the back when the flies rest. At the end of the abdomen the males have a genital segment, formed like a scorpion sting, while the end of the females’ abdomen is pointed and with a tubular organ for egg-laying.

Eristalis arbustorum
Eristalis arbustorum are of the order Diptera and belong to the family of hoverflies. Their body ranges from 8 to 11 mm in length. Eristalis arbustorum have antennae with feathered bristles. The scutellum is brown and the abdomen is black. The bottom edges of the segments of the abdomen are white. On the sides of the second segment of the female insect, reddish-yellow spots are visible which overlap onto the third segment on the body of the male insect.

The ruddy darter reaches body lengths of 40 - 45 mm and wingspans of 50 - 60 mm. The abdomen of the male ruddy darter widens in the final third and is bright red in colour, while the abdomen of the female often appears yellowish-brown to ochre, or red. Their bodies have black markings. The legs are always completely black.

They have black bristles on the central section of the chest and two fine dark, longitudinal lines are visible there. The common yellow dung fly has greyish-brown transparent wings with red to yellow edges at the front. The abdomen of the females is greyish-brown with black hair, while the abdomen of the male is light yellow in colour.

...ches from the neck to the scutellum. The outer stripes are shorter. Beside each outer stripe is one more black stripe which is much thinner and only half as long. The yellow swarming fly’s wings are transparent and extend far beyond the end of its abdomen in resting position. The wings are well developed, unlike those of other frit fly species. The halteres are white. The scutellum is yellow and has no markings. On the upper surface of the abdomen, which is yellow, are 4 black crossways. The legs are a weak brownish-yellow colour.

...d greenish eyes. The head and antennae are also reddish brown. The pronotum is broad and bears remarkably sharp spikes. The scutellum is smaller than in Pentatomidae species. The wing covers are ridged and - and covered in black indentations. On the abdomen there is a significant edge in drawing a bright line, which is frequently interrupted something darker. This crest is overlooking the side of the abdomen. The hind wings have a dark, golden brown sheen. The legs are strongly built and yellowish-green to reddish-yellow in colour.

... and chewing mouth parts , 3 simple eyes as well as compound eyes , a number of different wire-like sensors, a saddle-like Pronotum, hind legs which make them capable to jump, organs for the production and perception of sound and 11 segments of the abdomen with an ovipositor on the female abdomen . Egg-laying is done either directly on the ground or in frothy cocoons. European locusts - in contrast to the tropical species - develop in 6 larval stages. Locusts usually spend the winter in the egg state but there are species which overwin...

Murky-legged Black Legionnaire
... Their chest is slightly hairy. At the rear edge of the scutellum areoften a number of curved spikes, hence the family name "soldier flies". Their halteres are whitish in colour, their legs are long and yellow and their feet are dark. The abdomen of the murky-legged black legionnaire appears flattened. The murky-legged black legionnaire lives in humid forests or in forest edges. It can be seen in early summer on sunlit leaves, flying, or sitting in bushes, hedges or other flowering pl...

...bodies are uniform in shape, flattened and tapered at the end. They have leathery skin, which is strengthened like a shield in the course of their development in limestone deposits. This also protects them against dehydration. At the end of their abdomen are the remains? of a breathing tube which was not used and is therefore atrophied. The larvae have respiratory openings (stigma/spiracles) which are always open. On the chest (prothorax) the respiratory openings are very big in size. The larvae ...
