Panorpidae
Panorpidae are a family of the order Mecoptera. There are approximately 100 species globally of which only 5 species of the genus Panorpa are found in Central Europe. These often have a body length of 18 mm. The Panorpidae have an elongated head (beak shaped) with mouth parts for chewing and biting. The flies have 4 large dark wings, which are worn on the back when the flies rest. At the end of the abdomen the males have a genital segment, formed like a scorpion sting, while the end of the females’ abdomen is pointed and with a tubular organ for egg-laying.

Panorpidae (as all Scorpionflies) prefer shady areas in summer. They are often encountered in bushes and shrubs. They live on dead or injured insects and some species also eat nectar, fruit or the honeydew of aphids. Some also prey on insects trapped in spiders’ webs.

The female Panorpidae lays its eggs (several clutches) in loose soil, with which then stick together and form balls. The hatched larvae are similar to caterpillars and are dark. They have 8 pairs of short feet on their abdomens and bristles on their backs. The larvae live in the soil in which they feed on carrion, small living organisms or parts of plants.
